About Midwifery

Midwives are fully funded by the Ministry of Health and provide prenatal care, attend your birth and care for you and your baby up to 6 week postpartum. We offer complete care for women and their newborn babies; you do not need to see a family doctor or an obstetrician in addition to your midwives. When complications arise, midwives make appropriate referrals to specialists.

As of January 1, 1994, the practice of midwifery in Ontario has been covered in legislation that regulates several health professions in the province. Midwives are required to be registered with the College of Midwives of Ontario, which sets standards for practice and education. All aspects of midwifery care are fully funded for Ontario residents through the Ministry of Health.

Fundamental to the Canadian model is woman and family centered care that meets individual needs, promotes the healthy, normal process of pregnancy and birth, and values the profound meaning of the childbearing experience in women’s lives.
